If you want to get a real view of what an artist’s life is all about, check out Julian Dashper (1960-2009): It Is Life at MINUS SPACE. On view from August 7 until September 4, 2010. A must see, read, experience, feel.

In 2007, I wrote the post, Your Heart Makes Me Feel, after I read a wonderful tribute to artist Elizabeth Murray (1940-2007) in The Brooklyn Rail. Since then my feelings about the connection between art & life have only deepened more…

As Robert Gober wrote: “…art comes out of life, and that you had better pay attention.”

The taste of summer is…

fresh
I’ve been giving life to those whispery notes/sketches I often add to my <a href="http://www.ciak.fi.it/site/e_Product.asp?IdCategoria=37&ID=191"target=new">Eco Ciak. I love that little recycled paper sketchbook. It’s always a fun process to go back to the notes/sketches and try to understand the where/what/how/why.

warm
To me there is nothing like a simple and open conversation about interests, ideas and life as artists. I had the opportunity to moderate the virtual panel <a href="http://powerhouseprojects.com/powerhousepresents"target=new">Resource: Where Abstract Art is (From) with a great group of artists: Glen Cunningham, <a href="http://www.abatonbookcompany.us/MarkDagleyfile.html"target=new">Mark Dagley, <a href="http://laurafayer.com/"target=new">Laura Fayer, <a href="http://www.mollyherman.com/"target=new">Molly Herman, <a href="http://lorikirkbride.com/"target=new">Lori Kirkbride, <a href="http://www.benlarocco.com/"target=new">Ben LaRocco and <a href="http://www.rachaelw.com/"target=new">Rachael Wren. All artists were part of <a href="http://powerhouseprojects.com/2010/02/16/source/"target=new">Source, an exhibition curated by <a href="http://susanrossstudio.com/home.html"target=new">Susan Ross and <a href="http://melissastaiger.com/home.html"target=new">Melissa Staiger. Both, exhibition and virtual panel, were presented and sponsored by <a href="http://powerhouseprojects.com/"target=new">PowerHouse Projects. Source was on view at The Halls at Bowling Green from April 22nd through May 28th. Check out the virtual panel and take a look at their websites. It’s all good!

sweet
I finally signed up my family to a <a href="http://www.localharvest.org/csa/"target=new">CSA. The fruit begins to arrive next week. I’m excited and so looking forward to it…

The upcoming weeks and months look exciting and enriching as well. This fall, I’ll be taking a course on advocacy for children at <a href="http://www.cccnewyork.org/index.html"target=new">Citizens Committee for Children of New York. This is such a great organization and resource in the city.

More soon and I wish you all a great rest of the summer.

Fruit and vegetable stands, surf shops and Rex Cream’s Ice Cream are my kind of places.

Spring flow,
Spring glow,
just typing the word spring makes me smile.

We’ve been having glorious days filled with beautiful colors and sun. The weather always inspires me to choose what to experiment with in the kitchen. I have two new favorites: quinoa and kale. Cooking them is simple, their benefits are plenty and they taste great.

I was about to write about the benefits of kale when I found all I wanted to say (and more) in the great Brooklyn blog — <a href="http://butterbeanskitchen.wordpress.com/"target=new">Butter Beans Kitchen. This is a must read blog if you love real food. I agree with what they write about their blog:

“…If we want quality lives full of goodness, we have got to learn to make good choices about the food we plant and the food we eat. We have got to spend some more time in the kitchen and appreciating the food we have.

We have to teach our children, in a way that makes them want to celebrate. What could be more magical than the colors and tastes and sights that the Earth produces with sunshine, rain and a few pairs of dedicated hands…”

And here is the information about kale:

<a href="http://butterbeanskitchen.wordpress.com/2010/04/06/kale-in-aprils-glow/"target=new">Kale — in April’s glow by Butter Beans Kitchen. They will add kale recipes this month.

Enjoy!

The beautiful sun has inspired me to introduce him to the magic of running. So I’m looking for a running stroller and would love to hear about your experiences. Here are some of the qualities I’m looking for:

*lightweight (mama is petite and our charming neighborhood is old — streets have different levels)
*easy storage (we live in Brooklyn = small apartment)
*reasonable price

I really appreciate any suggestions and/or recommendations.

Thanks and happy spring to all!

The last couple of weeks have been full of creativity. I found some time to draw, run outside and explore for titles. I like titles especially for abstract work. To me, titles are the little things that tell our story. They help us share ideas with others, and begin a dialogue…

Lately, the weather has been warmer than usual — perfect to run outside. Last Sunday morning was a beautiful and sunny fall morning. I managed to run five miles and felt I could keep going. I enjoyed the longer run, but now that the weather is changing again, I’m looking for ways to trick my brain to enjoy running in the cold.

In the <a href="http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-243-410--13337-0,00.html"target=new">I’m a Runner section of <a href="http://www.runnersworld.com/0,7118,,00.html"target=new">Runner’s World, I found an interview with <a href="http://web.mit.edu/physics/facultyandstaff/faculty/wolfgang_ketterle.html"target=new">Wolfgang Ketterle, Nobel Prize-winning physicist from <a href="http://web.mit.edu/"target=new">MIT where he says:

“It’s quite nice running when it’s cold out. I like the contrast of the warm body, which is at a wonderful operating temperature, with the chill on the skin.”

I like the beautiful way he describes running in the cold. It also sounds like good material for a performance. I’m definitely going to remember his words while I’m out there pushing to get to the six mile…And maybe when I think of my next performance/drawings.

A bunch of ideas for the new web/blog have been floating inside my head. I like the idea of a blog because it’s less static and could function as a sketchbook. I hope to find some time to make the changes soon.

My little <a href="http://rossanamartinez-artandlife.blogspot.com/2009/09/lifes-secret.html"target=new">Tarahumara will be 7 months next week and is already crawling fast! And while I attempt to flow in yoga class, I’m amazed to see him be so naturally flexible. He can flow from downward facing dog to plank to pigeon pose with no trouble at all. Signs that he may become a runner or yogi just like mama.

A good read for new parents is <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/29/health/29brod.html?_r=1&pagewanted=1&em"target=new">From Birth, Engage Your Child With Talk by Jane E. Brody. And Animal Playground by <a href="http://www.putumayo.com/en/putumayo_kids_catalog_item.php?album_id=235"target=new">Putumayo Kids is a beautiful collection of animal-themed songs from around the world. The video above is from one of the album’s song The Littlest Birds by <a href="http://www.begoodtanyas.com/home.html"target=new">The Be Good Tanyas (Canada).

I can’t believe October is already here. Happy fall!

I was sleepy too and left my sleepiness guide me through the streets of Brooklyn. I set my iPod to shuffle songs. The cool air woke me up when I found myself in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DUMBO,_Brooklyn"target=new">DUMBO right in front of the water. I stopped for a couple of minutes to look at the view. It felt as if I was right in the center between the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan Bridge. I’m petite, but at that moment I felt so small. What an amazing place, I thought.

Bruce Springsteen’s song, Working on a Dream started playing. The song’s lyrics are beautiful and I love his voice when he sings: “I’m working on a dream, though trouble can feel like it’s here to stay…” The song reminded me of yesterday’s yoga class when the instructor asked us to find intention before we began the class. The purpose of my practice was to have strength and patience when life seems tough.

So here I am today, ready to do all I can to help a friend. I invite you to join Art Movement on Sunday, September 13, for the 19th annual 5K run/walk — Komen New York City Race for the Cure.

To join us or to make a gift, please visit <a href="http://www.komennyc.org/site/TR?team_id=36150&fr_id=1170&pg=team"target=new">Art Movement’s Race for the Cure. If you can’t be with us on that morning, please consider making a donation.

Every dollar counts! The money will help local organizations provide breast health education, screening and treatment.

Let’s be active, be part of the change, and help make the dream of a world without breast cancer true.

THANK YOU!

One of our good friends introduced us to the beautiful collection of children’s books called the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0060255005?ie=UTF8&tag=ms059-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=1789&creativeASIN=0060255005"target=new">Nutshell Library written and illustrated by <a href="http://www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/database/sendak_m.html"target=new">Maurice Sendak.

The collection has four tiny books perfect for little hands: Alligators All Around (an alphabet book), Chicken Soup with Rice (book of months), One Was Johnny (a counting book), and Pierre (a cautionary tale). The simplicity of the stories and illustrations make them enjoyable for both kids and adults alike.

A couple of weekends ago, we went to an art opening in Staten Island. It was rainy and cold — June has been very wet in New York. As we were traveling back home in the S.I. ferry, I couldn’t stop thinking about Chicken Soup with Rice. When we got home, I went straight to the kitchen and cooked a warm and delicious chicken soup with rice…still laughing!

I love books and these days I’m enjoying reading with Mateo. I take him to our local bookstore where I found another great book called <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0060286369?ie=UTF8&tag=ms059-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=1789&creativeASIN=0060286369"target=new">Open House for Butterflies by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruth_Krauss"target=new">Ruth Krauss. The book, also illustrated by Maurice Sendak has simple thoughts and illustrations like the books in the Nutshell Library. Some of my favorite thoughts are:

Look! I’m running away with my imagination.

There should be a parade when a baby is born.

Suppose old people grew down as young people grew up.

Easter eggs are all different outside but they’re alike inside.

A baby makes the mother and father — otherwise they’re just plain people.

Yesterday shows another day is here.

Everybody should be quiet near a little stream and listen.

A baby dances with its feet in the air.

I think a race looks prettier when everybody comes in even.

So always take some time to look, enjoy and imagine!

“Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand”. — Albert Einstein

It’s been some time since I last ran so I’m slowly adding short runs to my morning walks. It feels great to see and notice the little things while running. There is so much visual information around us that running has become part of my art practice.

To honor Earth Day (April 22), I thought of sharing and recommending the children’s book, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0152055673?ie=UTF8&tag=ms059-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0152055673""target=new">On the Day You Were Born by <a href="http://www.debrafrasier.com/pages/books/otb.html"target=new">Debra Frasier. The story is marvelous and the illustrations are just beautiful.

On the Day You Were Born

by Debra Frasier

On the eve of your birth

word of your coming

passed from animal to animal.

The reindeer told the Artic terns,

who told the humpback whales,

who told the Pacific salmon,

who told the monarch butterflies,

who told the green turtles,

who told the European eel,

who told the busy garden warblers,

and the marvelous news migrated worldwide.

While you waited in darkness,

tiny knees curled to chin,

the Earth and her creatures

with the Sun and the Moon

all moved in their places,

each ready to greet you

the very first moment

of the very first day you arrived.

On the day you were born

the round planet Earth

turned toward your morning sky,

whirling paste darkness,

spinning the night into light.

On the day you were born

gravity’s strong pull

held you to the Earth

with a promise that you

would never float again…

…while deep in space

the burning Sun

sent up towering flames,

lighting your sky

from dawn until dusk.

On the day you were born

the quiet Moon glowed

and offered to bring

a full, bright face,

each month, to your windowsill…

…while high above the North Pole,

Polaris, the glittering North Star,

stood still, shining silver light

into your night sky.

On the day you were born

the Moon pulled on the ocean below,

and, wave by wave,

a rising tide washed the beaches

clean for your footprints…

…while far out at sea

clouds swelled with water drops,

sailed to shore on a wind,

and rained you a welcome

across the Earth’s green lands.

On the day you were born

a forest of tall trees

collected the Sun’s light

in their leaves,

where, in silent mystery,

they made oxygen

for you to breathe…

…while close to your skin

and as high as the sky,

air rushed in and blew about,

invisibly protecting you

and all living things on Earth.

On the day you were born

the Earth turned, the Moon pulled,

the Sun flared, and, then, with a push,

you slipped out of the dark quiet

where suddenly you could hear…

…a circle of people singing

with voices familiar and clear.

“Welcome to the spinning world,” the people sang,

as they washed your new, tiny hands.

“Welcome to the green Earth,” the people sang,

as they wrapped your wet, slippery body.

And as they held you close

they whispered into your open, curving ear,

“We are so glad you’ve come!”

Enjoy…and best wishes to all the Boston Marathon runners!

What a great day we had in New York yesterday. In the afternoon, I went to a meeting in downtown Manhattan and as I entered the building, I already knew that after the meeting, I was going to walk the Brooklyn Bridge back home.

While I walked the bridge, I saw lots of runners, tourists and smiles. We’ve had a tough winter this year and yesterday was a nice break from the snow and the cold. I thought of how much I miss running the bridge in the morning, but I also thought about the happy time I’m in.

It’s funny how a big belly ⎯ the sign of a new life ⎯ brings so many good wishes and happiness. Strangers approached me to simply wish me the best and tell me a bit about their experiences. My due date is approaching, but at this time I’m (sort of) mentally prepared that baby boy may want to see the real world anytime now.

Some of you have asked me to write about my pregnancy experience as an artist, runner and yogi. I’ll be posting more soon, but to begin, I highly recommend to stay active during your pregnancy. Of course, you should consult your doctor. For me, being active, eating well and continue doing my normal activities (with modifications), has made my experience a very positive one. It’s quite amazing how our bodies are built to adjust to all these changes.

As an artist, I’ve had different reactions about my pregnancy. The’ve been mostly positive, but I’ve also had the strange looks and comments. Motherhood is just not for everyone ⎯ artist or not. As my mother taught me: be yourself no matter what others think. So if you’re an artist thinking about starting a family, I suggest to respect all opinions, but embrace what works for you and totally ignore the rest.

Here is an interesting study from the National Endowment for the Arts Issues Research Note on Women Artists: 1990 to 2005:

Women artists are as likely to be married as female workers in general, but they are less likely to have children. In 2003-2005, more than half of all women artists and all women workers were married. Yet only 29 percent of women artists had children under 18, almost six percentage points lower than for women workers in general.

To read the complete study, go to <a href="http://www.arts.gov/research/Notes/96.pdf"target=new">NEA research note Women Artists: 1990-2005.

I prefer a nice small gesture everyday ⎯ a smile, saying good morning, staying positive during a difficult day, a nice conversation, cooking and sharing a meal ⎯ over a one day big gift or celebration.

After spending a wonderful holiday with family, I’m grateful for everything, but especially for all the small moments of 2008. And every time I feel my baby boy kicking in my belly…I’m simply grateful for life!

I hope you all had a great and happy holiday!

Before flying back home, we received an unexpected visit by tropical storm Hanna. She woke us up in the middle of the night with an amazing display of lightning, wind and rain. While growing up, I lived through storms that made me understand how important is to respect Mother Nature.

I’m a morning person so I was half asleep while we closed windows and looked outside in the middle of the night. And although what we saw was only the last band of Hanna, its strength was impressive. For a second I worried about how shaky our airplane was going to be the next morning — not fun! My thoughts shifted quickly to remind me again of the power of nature and the importance of respecting our environment. I thought of the effort we put into making environmentally friendly changes at home, our studios, and jobs — either big or small — all important nonetheless.

My last thought before trying to get back to sleep was that I always want to have the strength of Mother Nature. Strength with lots of ideas and passion to move me through the waves of my art & life.

Happy new season to all!

I used to see myself as an artist that liked to run and to practice yoga. After years of equally enjoying all three — one day — they suddenly merged. Yoga for me is that special place where I’m just myself as I flow through poses like mountains, trees, triangles and warriors. I find all poses equally challenging, powerful and beneficial.

It’s another beautiful day in New York, but it felt brisk this morning at the Brooklyn Bridge. A sign that the summer is almost over and that the new art season is approaching. I’m honestly not ready for the summer to end. So I decided I will approach the new season and all its challenges similarly to a yoga class. For a moment, I saw myself flowing through all the roles that I’ve had in the past, have in the present, and look forward to having in the future.

Making relevant work is one of the most important qualities for me. One of my priorities this year is to be conscious of my environment. It’s amazing how small changes can improve our quality of life. And I’ve been trying to bring those changes into the studio as well. The challenge for the upcoming season is to find a balance between concept and outcome without compromising the essence of the work.

Easy? Nothing comes easy. Possible? Everything is possible with flexibility and endurance. I’m thinking of Warriors…

Yesterday, the sky was so foggy and gray in the morning I decided to wait and run a bit later than usual. I went for a run when the sun was already shining. It felt so good to finally wear shorts and feel the cool air in my arms and legs.

I ran to DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) and then made it to my favorite spot, the Brooklyn Promenade. It was still a bit foggy — I couldn’t see my dear morning friend, the Statue of Liberty. But I noticed the bright yellow flowers and trees glowing along the Promenade. I reached for my iPod and played Yellow by Coldplay. Just awesome!

I thought of the artist <a href="http://www.guggenheim.org/exhibitions/singular_forms/highlights_12a.html"target=new">Wolfgang Laib. In his work, Laib uses materials taken from nature like milk, pollen, beeswax and rice. His yellow pollen installations are my most favorite. He lives in a remote region of Germany and collects pollen from fields around his home. The installations are usually simple arrangements, but with an incredibly striking color.

And there I was totally inspired by nature. Seeing the transformation of a gray sky — like a blank canvas — into art…and it was all YELLOW!
