With the warm weather, heavy rains we are having in New York, and sweet smell of fresh fruit in our kitchen, this summer I’m moving at a slower pace.

On my days off from work, I run a bit later than usual because by the time I finish running the fruit market is open. After I run, I stop by the market and select the “fruit of the day” for a healthy breakfast. I admit, I’m a health nut, but I really look forward to these slow and fruity days.

I find the summer’s slower pace to be my balance, my way of avoiding total depletion of my natural resources. So when Matthew and I go to the studio and end up having a nice talk about everything (and nothing) at the same time, or when I end up taking a nice afternoon siesta on the studio couch, it feels good!

We’ve learned (and continue to learn) as artists after years of balancing jobs, art, family, and health that when slower times show up, we must value and enjoy them. It’s the best sustainable plan to keep us doing what we love season by season, year after year with renewed energy, ideas, and passion.
