A couple of nights ago, I received a call from my friend (and coworker) Tammy. This is my last week at work and I thought something was wrong. I answered my phone and asked her if everything was ok. She said: “you’re famous!” I laughed and asked her what was going on. She told me she just opened the November issue of her New York Magazine and that she found me in the culture section of an advertisement guide called The New Downtown NYC.
This opportunity happened through the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC). I recently participated in LMCC’s Workspace Residency and it was an amazing experience. The Residency was a nine-month free studio space in Lower Manhattan. But free studio space was just one of the great things the residency offered. Every week, we met for group discussions and studio visits. The sense of community, the discussions, and the opportunity to share with other artists and visitors was invaluable.
This was my first residency experience and my schedule was pretty busy. But the Workspace Residency made me remember the reason I moved to New York in the first place – to be an artist.
Thank you Melissa Levin, Erin Donnelly, and the rest of the staff at LMCC for all the hard work you do to give us the opportunity to be artists in New York. And thank you sweet Tammy for making me feel like the most famous person on earth. I’m still laughing and I’ll miss you!
